Innovative Medical Education at the University Medical Centre Groningen
The University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) is a leading university hospital and part of the University of Groningen. UMCG is not only a centre of medical expertise. They also play a key role in educating medical students and training healthcare professionals.
Sustainable and Flexible Needs
As medical science evolves, so does the need for digital innovation. UMCG aimed to digitise their educational and healthcare environment and had clear requirements for the ideal digital teaching tool, which needed to deliver:
- Reduced environmental impact
- Improved ease of use and active engagement
- Simplified management for the multimedia team via remote control
To identify the best solution, UMCG invited six manufacturers to showcase their offerings. After an extensive evaluation, i3-Technologies stood out with their robust i3RDM management platform, enabling the management team to monitor screens remotely, perform updates, and facilitate troubleshooting.
The Winner Takes It All
In the summer of 2024, several i3 X2 displays were installed in the Anda Kerkhoven Centre, UMCG's state-of-the-art education and training facility. Additionally, four i3 X3 displays on mobile trolleys were deployed in the healthcare areas, ensuring flexibility across various spaces.
Engaged Support
i3-Technologies maintained close communication with the UMCG team, offering advice and support throughout the process. Product enhancements were developed based on user feedback, such as a multifunctional button that quickly navigates users to the home screen, enhancing usability. i3-Technologies also assisted with software installations and firmware updates during implementation.
The rollout went smoothly, with the i3RDM platform introduced to the AV team and the installer, AVEX. Team members were onboarded in the new system without requiring extensive training.
The integration of these digital whiteboards marked a significant step forward in UMCG's transition to a modern, digital and educational healthcare environment.
Simplicity & Efficiency
Arjen Post, multimedia coordinator at UMCG, manages audiovisual resources for educational venues, meeting rooms, training facilities, and technical support for events and conferences with his team.
He highlights the benefits of the i3 X2 and i3 X3 touchscreens:
Improved Workflow
Since the implementation, the i3 touchscreens have greatly enhanced UMCG's workflow. Remote management eliminates the need for physical visits to each screen, saving time and minimising interruptions for users. Fewer disruptions and less frequent requests for technical support have improved overall efficiency.
The standardisation of new screens has contributed to a more streamlined and efficient workplace. UMCG plans to continue this standardisation in the future to further unify and simplify their digital environment.
Engaged Learning
The touch functionality of the i3 screens makes them more intuitive and user-friendly. Where a mouse was previously the main tool, users can now fully interact with the screens via touch, leading to greater engagement. This has improved the primary educational process.
Conclusion
With solutions from i3-Technologies, UMCG have created a sustainable and user-friendly learning environment that enhances efficiency and provides optimal support for students and healthcare professionals.
